Sore After A Chiropractic adjustment? Here’s what is normal

You came in for pain relief, so why do you feel a little sore afterward? I get this question all the time, and the answer is usually good news: mild soreness after an adjustment is a normal part of healing, not a sign that something went wrong.

Why You Might Feel Sore

An adjustment moves your joints, muscles, and connective tissue in ways they might not be used to, especially if you've been holding tension in that area for a while. It's a lot like the soreness you feel after trying a new workout. Your body isn't hurt; it's adapting to renewed movement and better alignment.

Here's what's typically normal:

  • Mild stiffness or achiness in the treated area for 12 to 48 hours

  • A "worked out" feeling in the muscles nearby

  • A little fatigue as your nervous system settles into the change

When This Kind of Soreness Is Nothing to Worry About

If it's mild, starts easing up within a day or two, and feels similar to the ache after a good workout, you're in normal territory. It usually means your body is adjusting to improved joint mobility, which is actually a good sign.

A few things that help:

  • Drink plenty of water

  • Keep moving gently instead of staying completely still

  • Light heat if it's more general muscle tightness

When You Should Reach Out to Me

Most soreness is nothing to worry about, but call my office if you notice:

  • Sharp or shooting pain

  • New numbness or tingling

  • Soreness that's getting worse instead of better, or lasting more than a few days

  • Anything that feels meaningfully different from normal muscle soreness

These are rare, but if something feels off, I'd always rather hear from you than have you sit at home wondering.

Healing Isn't Always a Straight Line

Especially early in your treatment plan, your body is unlearning old compensation patterns and figuring out a healthier way to move. A little soreness along the way is often just part of that process, and it tends to fade as your body adjusts over your first few visits.
